Laboratory for the University of Gothenburg

Relocation of research facilities

The new Natrium building is under construction at Medicinareberget in Gothenburg, close to medical education and research departments.

Parts of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Gothenburg are due to move in here in 2023. With this new development, the university will be better positioned to address the challenges of the future for society and the environment. It was essential for elements of the work at the Lundberg laboratory that were sensitive to interruption to be rehoused as it needed to continue during the construction period. While the timetable was ambitious, the university also required its future workplaces to be of the highest quality.

“My extensive array of expensive, high-tech analytical equipment needs premises that can cope with both heat generation and high levels of noise from the vacuum pumps.”

The challange

Premises that are functional and reliable

Baseline

  • Old premises in considerable need of renovation
  • Current users to be relocated
  • Major ongoing construction project in the area creates logistical and time-related challenges

Requirements

  • Must adjoin existing building
  • Autonomous construction including essential facilities such as offices, laboratory spaces, changing rooms and kitchenettes
  • Delivery of modules on site, 15 weeks after placing of order

The solution

  • Three floors, 800 sq metres in total
  • Customised air-conditioning systems in laboratories and office spaces
  • Fire rated
  • Roof platform for supply equipment
  • Delivered on schedule

Benefits for the client

  • New, modern, functional premises
  • HHigh-tech premises that can accommodate advanced ventilation systems and high temperatures
  • Short delivery time
  • Five-week construction period on site
  • Minimal disruption to existing business
  • Can be moved and reused in another location at the end of the project

The result

Premises can be customised to suit the needs of the organisation

The difference between prefabricated and site-built construction is technique and construction time, not function or requirements. Prefabricated and site-built construction are subject to the same legislation. Prefabricated components are manufactured in factories and construction time is considerably shorter. Both facilities have customised their respective floors to meet the needs of the work that they do. Proteomics has chosen to configure their office space in a different way to MPE.

“We’re delighted with Swedish Modules’ solution. They kept track of our requirements and the end result has for the most part met our needs as tenants. It’s brand new and so functional. We now have an excellent new environment in which to work.”

Malin Bäckström, Scientist och Facility manager, MPE
